Where are the Bay Islands? Where is Roatan?

Roatan is one of three large islands and over 60 small islets and keys that form the Bay Islands.  Located in the western Caribbean, about 35 miles north of the northern coast of Honduras. MAPS

A mere two-hour flight from Miami, the Bay Islands is one of the closest caribbean destinations,  offering a perfect and unspoiled Caribbean vacation.

English is widely spoken throughout the Islands, though the official language is Spanish.

Why Roatan? - Roatan is among  the world's top diving destinations, and we hope it will soon become a great racing destination too.-  The idea came to me on a sunny Roatan morning, when I saw a quick but clear flash through my mind, as I walked  to my hotel still wet from one more wonderful dive. Yes! a swim on this crystal clear bay (West Bay Beach) among corals and color fish, would be the best start to a challenging triathlon! So a few years later we finally held the inaugural Bay Islands Triathlon 2003.

ACCOMMODATIONS

Sandra Sampayo, my partner and now reservations guru at TropicalRez,  has obtained some super deals that we mere mortals cannot begin to get. How do $55 and $70/night sound for a starter price? In some of the best beach property in the Caribbean? Ocean front? You can of course go up higher.  You can also share your room and bring down costs. The host hotel is really gorgeous, and a great deal when compared to resorts of its class around the area.

Home Stay - We are working in getting some homes around West Bay Beach for elite athletes. The list is short, so if you would like to be put on this waiting list let me know at: info@bayislandstriathlon.com. We expect to have some homes available towards the end of January.

Share a room - With the low prices hotels are offering during race week, it's feasible to share a room with another athlete. We are keeping a short list of people who want to share. To be part of this list, please email me.

Most hotels on the beach are very spacious 1BR apartments with a sofa bed in the living room. So when sharing you must keep this in mind.

PRO Athletes - We are expecting a good group of professional athletes to this ITU sanctioned race for 2004, some are already registered.  With the cutoff for the Olympics in May, the Bay Islands Triathlon will be among a handful of events offering ITU points in 2004.

Our prize purse is expected to be $8,000 (not huge, I know but growing each year), and with the presence of athletes ranked within the 20 top spots in the world rankings; we expect to improve the Quality of Field Factor (QFF) for this event. In addition you need to realize this is a small race, so the possibilities of improving your standings is high.

NEWS

Check out our new name and logo! www.bayislandstriathlon.com

We are very proud to announce our Naming Sponsor, and most important sponsor, Port Royal Beer.

PORT ROYAL Beer is one of the most popular beers in the North Coast of Honduras. It's light body and refreshing taste lends itself to an almost addictive consumption of this liquid when you're at the beach.

The name Port Royal was inspired by the port of Port Royal, an old pirate's town in Roatan. Today Port Royal's quiet bay is home to sailors passing by, or simply sailing around the islands. When you come to Roatan, take an island tour and ask your driver to take you by Port Royal.

ITU Status - We will soon sign our contract with the ITU. The first step towards this is securing our insurance, which is being finalized today. Race information should be updated in the ITU website anytime now. The event is already listed under the ITU Calendar of Events.
